In this picturesque setting the Merelhof is tucked away in the Eastern region called the Wouden. The Merelhof is a country home on the outskirts of Harkema in the county of Achtkarspelen. The owners passions are gardening and outdoor living combined with hospitality for guests and visitors.

The Merelhof is about 2.5 acres, and the garden can be described as rustic scenery with a cottage style flower garden, a treed area and a pond, creating a varied landscape in the garden, a haven or birds of all kinds. There are some 30 birdhouses for nesting through out the garden. Much attention is also given to the well-being of small animals, and here and there are small piles of stones to serve as hiding places for creatures such as lizards, frogs and the like. Small animals of prey and birds find their places of safety in the many thickets. As you stroll through the garden you will be surprised to find many quiet spots tucked away to enjoy the sounds and sights of nature, or to simply to relax and do nothing. In short, a peaceful place for man and animal.

For those interested in "out of the ordinary" gardens there is opportunity to visit the Merelhof garden during June and July every Wednesday between 9am-9pm. (9.00-21.00) Group visits by appointment.
